Sharpeners on Bicycles
Have we forgot those good old days? Mmmm... I know we haven't. Hidden in the huge ocean of our memories are many things. One of the things unhid from that ocean of my mind a few days back when I saw a man who was sharpening the knives of a hotel's kitchen using the "machinery" fixed on his bicycle. My mind jumped back a couple of decades and the pictures of my childhood were suddenly played back. Most of the Indians do know what I saw. It has become a history now. But believe me, I saw it. I remember seeing this kind of sharpeners every couple of days when I was a kid. Now the small towns have developed into big cities, and seeing such old techniques is rare. Enjoy the photo friends…

Great capture...I've seen one of these in the market in Nice fairly recently. It's a very practical way of keeping knives really sharp. I love that fountain of sparks..

ReplyDeleteYesterday was the first time I had heard of sharpening knifes on a bicycle, when I read a short story in a magazine with a picture. I like the picture with the sparks flying.

Wow - what a great photo you got of this, so alive! I think I remember seeing this done in a movie sometime, though never in life. The practice makes good sense - and I bet it works better than my knife sharpener at home.

ReplyDeleteYes I remember seeing a man at home in the North East of England back in the 'fifties who had a bike and a sharpening tool on the front of it. He came around the streets regularly.
That was in the days when you bought good quality Sheffield steel knives and scissors and kept them sharp with the help of the knife man.
Now it's cheap throw away goods. Sad!
