Sharpeners on Bicycles

Have we forgot those good old days? Mmmm... I know we haven't. Hidden in the huge ocean of our memories are many things. One of the things unhid from that ocean of my mind a few days back when I saw a man who was sharpening the knives of a hotel's kitchen using the "machinery" fixed on his bicycle. My mind jumped back a couple of decades and the pictures of my childhood were suddenly played back. Most of the Indians do know what I saw. It has become a history now. But believe me, I saw it. I remember seeing this kind of sharpeners every couple of days when I was a kid. Now the small towns have developed into big cities, and seeing such old techniques is rare. Enjoy the photo friends…

  1. Great capture...I've seen one of these in the market in Nice fairly recently. It's a very practical way of keeping knives really sharp. I love that fountain of sparks..

  3. Yesterday was the first time I had heard of sharpening knifes on a bicycle, when I read a short story in a magazine with a picture. I like the picture with the sparks flying.

Thank you for the nice comments you left on my blogs.

Your blog — "Photings" has good photo-poem combinations. You're an artist.

  9. Wow - what a great photo you got of this, so alive! I think I remember seeing this done in a movie sometime, though never in life. The practice makes good sense - and I bet it works better than my knife sharpener at home.

You've got a very interesting blog, with many great photos. (Love the buffalo!) Thanks for visiting me, too. (By the way - I replied to your question about the church over at my blog.)

  11. Thanks for your nice words mkhansen. Which movie did you see this in? A Hollywood movie?

Ya, the buffalo is one of my most favorites :)

I got your reply to your Church on Sunday: Full moon post.

  12. Thank you so much Gramma. I immediately checked your My Reading Corner blog. One more person knows about this; I saw that Winifred has put a comment in your post that she knows about this.

  13. Hi Bhavesh I've sent you an email.

Yes I remember seeing a man at home in the North East of England back in the 'fifties who had a bike and a sharpening tool on the front of it. He came around the streets regularly.

That was in the days when you bought good quality Sheffield steel knives and scissors and kept them sharp with the help of the knife man.

Now it's cheap throw away goods. Sad!

  14. Thank you for that wonderful piece of information Winifred. I too don't like the now-a-days use-and-throw goods.

  15. So it seems that the skill is shown in many parts of the world, not just in India! I would love to know more from my friends in every part of the world.

  17. Interesting photo. I don't know if this form of knife sharpening is part of our history in the US, but I've never seen it.
