Mahadji Shinde Chhatri

Mahadji Shinde Chhatri

Mahadji Shinde was the leader of the Maratha empire from 1768 to 1794. He was cremated at this place on 12-February-1794. The monument was created in his memory, and is thus called Mahadji Shinde Chhatri. “Chhatri” literally means umbrella. The monument is a shelter to his cremation place. In the old times, Chhatris were created to display pride. The initial usage of Chhatris was to demarcate funerary places. However, Chhatris later became an element of the building designs. See Mayur Vatika of Jaipur to see how typical Chhatri designs look like.
