I can't believe that it is still a dream for me to photograph the beautiful natural chandeliers of Amaltas “in detail”. Some random shots from a distance, taken hurriedly, showing below. Even though these are distant photos, they are close to my heart. I just love this tree.
The scientific name of Amaltas is Cassia fistula. In the different parts of the world, it is known by different names. Some of those names are Garmalo, Bandar Lathi, Golden Shower Tree, Bahava, Sunari, Kritamala, Aragvadha, Chaturangula and Suvarnaka. The names are as beautiful as the flowers this tree produces. Just beautiful!
Every Malayali, regardless of his / her faith will promptly identify these flowers, Bhavesh. These flowers are called 'konnapoovu' in our language and plays an important role during 'Vishu' festival. These blossoms, along with ripe fruits, jewelry, set of new 'mundu' (dhoti) and picctures of our Gods and Goddesses are placed in front of a mirror. This is called the 'Vishukkani'. Early morning, the elders of the house, will wake up the younger members and blindfolding them with their hands, will lead them to where the mirror is placed. After they are seated in front of the mirror, their eyes are opened. The person gazes at all the colourful fruits, the 'konnapoovu', and the pictures of our Gods and Goddesses and prays. After which they touch the feet of the elders to seek their blessings and the elders give them money as a 'dakshina'.
