Mexican Prickly Poppy [Argemone Mexicana, Satyanashi, सत्यानाशी]

Mexican Prickly Poppy [Argemone Mexicana, Satyanashi, सत्यानाशी]

I had pictured this a few months ago in a beautiful place named Baneshwar. My post named Crafted Leaf shows another beauty of Baneshwar.

This plant is considered a weed in India, spread almost all over the country. It's poisonous, but has medicinal use too. I remember my mother said once that this flower's juice, or the juice of its leaves, if applied in the eyes is useful for better vision. Please don't try it because it may need some preparation before applying. I'll have to ask my mom about this, and get important Ayurved information from her knowledge-pool :)

  1. It's a nice flower, it looks like our prickly pear flower (a cactus) except for the stigma which is green.
Promised I won't try it on my eyes! :)

  3. Very pretty flower, cures of your mother seem very interressants to take advantage of beauty without poisoning itself.

  5. It's a very nice looking weed. It's interesting that it's used for medicinal purposes. So much of what we have at our footsteps is overlooked. Beautiful photo! :)

  8. Oh my!! Is this flower so beautiful? All we do is crush the plant as its thorny....

The trivia and the scientific name would surely help to dig further about its medicinal properties. Thanks

  14. Yes, the juice SHOULD be good for the eyes, so that it can be used to heal them if a person gets poked in the eye by those thorns when leaning down to smell the beautiful flower!!!

  15. It certainly is a gorgeous flower...but it would behoove one to be careful not to get too close...that doth look prickly!

I'd be interested in what your mother has to say...sometimes those old remedies really work...and sometimes they make things worse...

  16. Yeah .....some of them are medicinal but one should have proper knowledge about it.

  18. A pretty 'weed', but looks a bit dangerous with the slender pointed foliage.

  23. Very pretty, Bhavesh, weed or not. Isn't it funny that so many pretty flowers, especially the tropical kind, are poisonous. I know in Florida, they plant oleander along the causeways, then put up signs, warning not to use the stems to roast hot dogs, etc. The beautiful yellow alamanda is one of my favorites and it, too, is poisonous!

  30. Yes, yes, yes. We can plant the Mexican poppy here in Los Angeles, and it will spread as far as you let it. Pretty plants will do that -- bamboo, for example.
