Eurasian Hoopoe - Upupa epops [Upupidae family]

Eurasian Hoopoe - Upupa epops [Upupidae family]

Eurasian Hoopoe or simply Hoopoe is a bird of Upupidae family. In fact, it's the only species left from that family! Hoopoe's distinct feature is its crown. What I noted while taking its photographs was that the crown opens when the bird gets cautious or concerned, or while making sounds. See the 7th photo that has Hoopoe's crown partially opened. If you notice closely, the pose is of alert status, opening the crown a bit. Isn't it amazing?

  4. What beautiful shots. I haven't seen this bird anywhere around here..mostly in the compound outside our house, we have dozens of crows. However, that same beautiful Indian golden oriole comes every single day about 7AM and pecks on our kitchen window until driven off by crows. I posted its picture when I first arrived in India.

  5. The red sandstone
    shadow casting
    a tinge on the grounds,
    and
    The Upopa Epops commandant
    resplendent
    in his special striped uniform
    and matching crown cap
    marches around,
    checking.

So much grass on the ground,
    the Upopa soldiers
    wasting time
    eating and pecking
    while some enjoy the sun.

    He hears
    a carriage and horse
    in the distance,
    cranes his neck,
    and decides
    to start picking stuff himself.

    He hurries all,
    gathers them together,
    all alert,
    lined up
and proudly holding up their crowns,
    for its a big day,
    and they must present
    a guard
    of bird honor.

    Attention ! Achtung!
The new president is about to arrive.
